Fever

When I first noticed on Thursday that instead of just generally feeling crappy, I might be legitimately sick, my first thought was about the good timing. On Friday, the new Michael Chabon and a collection of Miranda July stories were due to arrive, and a day or two of enforced bedrest sounded pretty nice, all things considered.

That was before the fever.

Friday arrived, and so did my books, but it brought with it a wobbly, sweating unpleasantness which felt an awful lot like the sensation I had in London, the one that made me stay an extra day abed in a foreign country.

The dude from Pink Floyd got a sensation of his hands feeling like two balloons. Peggy Lee also had positive reports from a similar illness. I, however, feel like absolute hell. I've only had a few moments of genuine lucidity, and haven't even been able to read the dust jackets of my shiny new books. And I shake uncontrollably whenever I emerge from underneath my winter comforter, despite temperatures in the 80s.

Anyway, that's where I've been. Still haven't broken the fever, so that's where I remain, should any of you be wondering where I am.

I was going to send you an Get well soon e card, but they almost made me sick they were so cheesy! Hope the fever clears soon. I seem to recall that rubbing garlic on the soles of your feet is an old wives remedy that may or may not be successful.

Bummer! Sorry to hear it. Here's hoping you come out of it soon with enough to spare to read your books.

It's a fine time to be sick -- after you've quit your job.

You're a little muzzy on the concept, aren't you?

I hope you feel much better really soon. Please try to give us bulletins when you're up to it.

Wishing you well, Mr. Moon. Body and spirit can sometimes emerge from the sickness cocoon strangely restored. I hope this will be so for you, and that you'll then be able to carry on apace with your novel.

Ver: If the card nearly made a healthy person sick, I am very glad you didn't oopt to send it. Haven't tried the garlic thing.

Joni: Thanks. I hope to come out of it with enough to spare to write my books, but for now, I would certainly settle for reading some.

HinSF: Ah, yes, but you see I was freelance. Had I taken ill while working, I would simply have not been paid for the time I missed. This works out much better, as no one was paying me anyway.

RTS: The fever is not entirely broken as of this writing, but already my brain feels lively. Silver lining to illness is the euphoria recovery can bring.

There is nothing worse than being sick at this time of year.
