Chicago fog

I'm not sure if it's actually fog, when the visible swarms of water molecules do not really reach the ground. It may be more accurate to call it haze or mist. But I'm not gonna go look it up.

The last couple of days have brought it, though, whatever it is. The place I am working at the moment is on the 24th floor of a building right on the river, and all of the windows have grown completely opaque in the afternoons.

From the ground, it combines with the large scale of the buildings downtown to create something eerily pretty. I think in a place without tall buildings, it might just look cloudy, but here the mist swallows things. Depending on your angle, the street you are on can appear to gradually fade into nothing at all.

Looking upward, I kept thinking of the origin of the word "skyscraper."

Some pictures of the fog. More pics of this, and other things, have been added to Flickr. Bigger on Flickr, too.

Scarlett: Glad to see you again, and glad also that you enjoy the foggy/hazy/misty Chicago.

Lovely photos - what a strange mist, like something from a sci-fi film. Surely the aliens have landed.

Evocative photos of the hazy, misty fog that is also a low cloud.

Wonderful pictures. I am fascinated with half-images emerging from fog, and will check out your others.

Signs: I'll send these pics to M. Night Shyamalan, see what he thinks. In the meantime, my calls to local authorities seem to imply that no aliens are here yet.

Writer reading: Hey! Nice to meet you. And thanks for the comment.

HinSF: I hope you liked the others. I have about 200 in total, but only kept a handful.

I like that, origin of skyscraper.

I love that about the fog, though being me, and being in the countryside I call it all, whatever it might be, mist. I like how it makes things we assume to be solid and material look as though they are dematerializing, and rematerializing before us. Actually mist is a fairly strong element in the story I have been working on, for just that reason. (no monsters/ and or aliens in my fog though)

Very atmospheric pictures. All the more beautiful in black and white.
