Phoctober the eighth

I thought today would be a nice day to focus on the strange wonder that is the city of Chicago. Some of the joy I've found in my new camera comes from the fact that there is always something interesting to do or see in this town.

Personally, I think it's nice that someone took the time to label the mattress as infested, that our streets apparently make a nice dining room. I like that the dark interiors of the bars are sometimes festooned with pieces of police equipment, and that you can get that used car "OK'd." I like the sock and belt vendor who sets up on the street, and the apartment that does up its windows with mannequin heads. There are sometimes ferrets on our tables. And within two blocks on Chicago Avenue, you can get yourself completely outfitted for your new career as a pimp or a cowboy at stores that clearly do not think of these items as "costumes."

As an added bonus, embiggen the cowboy shot to be treated to the most interesting bolo tie I have yet seen. Yes, that's Pope John Paul II adorning that particular piece of finery.

Scarlett gets Rocky Mountain high..

It isn't too late to join the fun. Just do a photo post, mention Phoctober, and come and tell me about it in the comments.

You know, people in Europe have been eating at sidewalk cafe's for ages.
It's Chic.
Your street eater is in!

Loved the window shots too.

...as far as Rocky Mountain high, todays shots aren't really that far up, this weekend I'm hitting a few 14ers... those are really high.

I am more of a country mouse myself.
I like your photos though, and your take on them, interesting.

Great shots, Maht, amazing reflections of a diverse city.

I've also done my phoctober thing again...

See, all your mattress needs is me to call up someone and harass them till it's moved!

In all seriousness, you are getting some amazing shots. Those ferrets are so unexpected.

Did I happen to mention I once had breakfast in Chicago? I did? Is it any more relevant now than it was before?

I'm wondering if that guy in the street can actually move? Have you been back to check on him? And Pope John Paul II on a tie thingy; that is weird.

Scarlett: True, but he's left the sidewalk and is eating at a "street" cafe at this point. Plus, he's right in front of his house. As for the Rocky Mountain high, I was more looking for glib marketing lines than measuring your altitude from the post. Apologies. Still, those are the Rocky Mountains in some of those shots, no?

Taffiny: I was once more of a country mouse. That may be part of why I find the city so fascinating.

AbVan: Thanks, and I really liked the wind poem from your post.

Liz: It was actually where it was supposed to be, there by the dumpsters awaiting trash collection. And thanks for the nice comment about my good fortune with a camera. Perhaps you'll Phoctober before the month concludes?

Debi: Yes, yes, and no. Then again, I have breakfast in Chicago all the time. That may be why I am not impressed.

Ver: He's actually my neighbor. I have seen him around since. He seems to be fine.

Oh I'm in! It's taken me hours to finally get here and now I've forgotten waht (deliberate typo of course) I was going to say.

I do however remember that it was wonderfully witty and probably didn't mention breakfast again ...
